There's a surprise winner in the 131st running of the Kentucky Derby.
"Giacomo" caught "Afleet Alex" in the final strides and pulled off an improbable victory at Churchill Downs, finishing about one length ahead of "Closing Argument." The 50-to-1 shot paid $102.60, the second-highest payoff in Derby history.
Mike Smith won the Derby for the first time in 12 tries. He took Giacomo to the outside down the stretch and surged past Closing Argument and Afleet Alex before finishing in 2:02:36.
Derby favorite Bellamy Road finished seventh, over six lengths back.
