Gay Marriage

Voters will NOT decide this November whether to ban gay marriage in Colorado.

That's because Republicans in the state Legislature failed to get enough support to get the proposal on the ballot.

Republican Representative Kevin Lundberg of Berthoud sponsored the bill. He says recent attempts by gays and lesbians in other states to get legal recognition of their civil unions is threatening the institution of marriage.

Lundberg says marriage should be clearly defined as a union between a man and a woman, but says voters should make the final decision.

The House Judiciary Committee killed the bill on a party line vote Tuesday after Democrats said it was unconstitutional and would cost taxpayers to defend in court if it passed.
