Next Governor?

Republican Congressman Bob Beauprez is making it clear he'll run for governor next year, but he says a formal announcement is probably a few months away.

The second-term congressman from the state's new Seventh District says he's taking steps toward running, such as building a statewide organization and raising money. And he says he doesn't intend to take any steps backward.

Beauprez says his time in Washington has been more rewarding than he expected, but he says he thinks he can have more influence on Colorado's direction from the governor's mansion.

Republican Governor Bill Owens is term-limited.

Republican Marc Holtzman, president of the University of Denver, has raised more than $400,000 in an exploratory bid for governor, and former Congressman Scott McInnis has been mentioned as a possible GOP candidate.

No Democrats have formally announced they will run, but possible candidates include entrepreneur Rutt Bridges, former Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter and former Lieutenant Governor Gail Schoettler.
