A setback for employees of the nations second largest air carrier. United Airlines' attempts to drop its employee pension plans are one step closer to reality.

The government's pension protection agency has agreed to drop its opposition after agreeing on a settlement with the airline in federal bankruptcy court.

The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation had been trying to fight the airline since August in its efforts to drop its 4 pension plans.

Now, the fight is left to the workers unions.

United says keeping the pension plans would force it into financial jeopardy.
