Officer Shot Investiagion

Updated: Sat 9:49 PM, Nov 16, 2002

A gun used to shoot a Denver police officer in the face was not the same one used in a homicide the night before. A .38-caliber revolver was used in both crimes, but Lieutenant Jon Priest says tests revealed there was no connection between the weapons used. Authorities say 20-year-old Anthony Jefferson shot officer Kurt Peterson in the cheek during a traffic stop on November Seventh. That was the day after someone shot and killed 48-year-old Paul Gray in a Denver neighborhood. Investigators had said if the same gun was used in both incidents, it could explain Jefferson's actions. Jefferson was wanted only on a warrant for violating probation. The offense probably would have netted him no more than two years in jail. The 39-year-old Peterson underwent surgery to remove bullet fragments and a gland from his cheek. He has been released from the hospital.
