Budget Cuts Proposed For New Jail

El Paso County commissioners may lock up nearly 6 million dollars in funds spent on parks, roads and health services in order to slam the door on more criminals. The cuts are needed if the county borrows to build a 38 million dollar 850-bed wing at the Criminal Justice Center. It would need another 2-point-86 million dollars to operate it. The cuts were proposed by County Administrator Terry Harris and would be phased in over three years. Commissioners approved funding for a courthouse project even though voters rejected a tax increase at the November 5th election. Colorado Springs City Manager Lorne Kramer says the cuts would have a significant impact as the city wrestles with a sales tax revenue drop. He's asked managers to assess exactly how the county cuts would affect the city.
