Crews were still putting out hot spots this week at the site of the Coal Seam fire that ignited more than five months ago. A small crew contracted by the state Division of Minerals and Geology used a track hoe and bulldozer to dig through a refuse heap of coal and rock where the fire ignited in June. They doused it with water and tried to cool the area to keep people from injuring themselves if they walked over it. Project manager Steve Renner says the 5-thousand dollar project was completed yesterday. The fire was ignited by an underground mine fire burning since 1910. It lit tinder dry brush and raced toward Glenwood Springs, fueled by high winds. The wildfire burned more than 12-thousand acres and destroyed 29 homes.
