School Bus MGN KAUZ
Gov. Owens' son is entering a juvenile diversion program as penalty for charges that he and two classmates vandalized school buses and vehicles in July near Smoky Hill High School.
Sixteen-year-old Mark Owens and classmate Nicholas Giardina, 17, were accepted into the program. The district attorney's office says the program works with eligible first-time offenders. The sentencing for 16-year-old Tristan Noel-Pierre Volpi was not released.
The juvenile diversion program requires offenders to sign contracts on how they will repair harm caused by their crime to the victim, the community and themselves.
The program often includes community service, restitution, letters of apology, and participation in a community accountability board to meet with those affected by the crime.
