A backcountry hiker from Colorado Springs is dead after he was buried in an avalanche on Quandary Peak near Breckenridge.
Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson says 26-year-old Jeff Uppendahl was buried in seven feet of snow.
He was a teacher at Liberty High School in Colorado Springs.
Summit County sheriff's officials say the slide was reported around 12-30 p-m, was 400 feet wide, slid two-thousand vertical feet and triggered at least four other avalanches.
What started the avalanche isn't yet known.
Another man was able to ski out of the snowslide and report that Uppendahl was trapped, prompting a search by about 40 people.
The associate director of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center says Uppendahl's body was found around 4-30 p-m. Nick Logan also says Uppendahl didn't have an avalanche beacon or other emergency equipment.
At least two other people have died in avalanches in Colorado this season.
