The United States has reached a critical agreement with France on a tough Iraq resolution.
That paves the way for a Security Council vote tomorrow which President Bush is confident of winning.
The Council has set the vote for 10 a.m. Eastern time.
The change addresses concerns by France, Russia, Syria and others that the original text would have let the United States determine on its own whether Iraq had committed an infraction. They feared that such a determination would have triggered an attack on Saddam.
The new wording requires UN weapons inspectors to make an
assessment of any Iraqi violations.
Russia's ambassador wouldn't say how his government would vote.
But a U.S. official says Russian President Vladimir Putin has
conveyed a "positive" message during a conversation with President Bush.
