Same Sex Benefits

The Colorado Springs City Council has decided to extend health care benefits to same-sex partners of city employees.

That's prompting warnings from opponents who say council members could be ousted by angry voters.

The council voted 5-4 Wednesday to include the benefits in next year's budget.

The vote is preliminary but final approval is considered a formality.

The conservative Christian group Focus on the Family campaigned last week to block the plan. The group sent letters to 14,000 local families.

Supporters of same-sex partner benefits say it would be discrimination not to offer them.
