It pays to be a public official.

Figures reported by the state's elected officials show they received several hundred thousand dollars in cash and gifts last year.

Governor Bill Owens received about $87 thousand in speaking fees and freebies such as event tickets and plane trips. That beats last year's total of more than $78 thousand.

Some lawmakers received trips to countries like Taiwan, the Philippines, and Israel and tickets to Rockies, Nuggets, and Avalanche games.

At least 3 lawmakers received cash gifts to pay for office expenses.

At this time, state law has no limitations on how much elected officials can receive in gifts.
