The former superintendent of Dinosaur National Monument in northwestern Colorado will become the next superintendent of Shenandoah National Park.

Chas Cartwright this summer will succeed Doug Morris, who retired this winter.

He will encounter tight budgets threatening maintenance and interpretive programs. He'll also have to deal with emissions from power plants in the region that give Shenandoah some of the worst air pollution in the park system.

Cartwright will supervise 180 employees and oversee a 200,000 acre park that includes more than 500 miles of nature trails, 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail and 80,000 miles of designated wilderness.
