A student is dead after being stabbed during a fight in a Denver Public Schools cafeteria.
District spokesman Mark Stevens says the 17-year-old boy died at a hospital a short time after being stabbed at Montbello High School in northeast Denver.
A fight broke out as third period lunch was ending and one of the participants pulled out a knife.
Police spokeswoman Detective Virginia Lopez says a 16-year-old boy was arrested off campus on suspicion of first-degree murder. Both were students at the school.
Lopez says it doesn't appear the fight was gang related.
Grief counselors were at the school this afternoon, while a crisis team, added security and police are planned for tomorrow.
Stevens says the death appeared to be the first homicide in the district in at least nine years.
