Colleges and high schools all over the nation recognize the term Title IX. It's a rule that demands equal opportunity in athletics.

On Tuesday, the Springs hosted a town hall meeting to discuss Title IX. The idea was to get input and see if the U.S. Education Department is being fair in treating men's and women's sports.

Catherine Grant is the former Athletic Director at Iowa State University. "I am looking for stronger enforcement of the law we've had for 30 years. When you think that the law's been in effect for so long and we still haven't reached equal opportunity, the most important question is 'Why? Why not?'"

On Tuesday afternoon, a group of female athletes turned out to show their support for Title IX. They say the law makes sure they get the same resources and financial support as men.

Title IX

  • Title IX is the portion of the Education amendments of 1972 that prohibits sex discrimination in educational institutions that receive any federal funds.

  • “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

  • If educational institutions are found to violate Title IX, their federal funding can be withdrawn.

  • In all cases to date, however, institutions found to violate Title IX have agreed to specific plans to comply with the law rather than lose funding.
