The Vatican says doctors are urging Pope John Paul not to speak for several days after he underwent a tracheotomy to ease a breathing crisis.
He had the procedure yesterday and the Vatican says he's now off a respirator and breathing on his own. The papal spokesman also says the tracheotomy "was not an emergency procedure."
The pope was rushed to the hospital yesterday following a relapse of the flu. It's his second trip to the hospital this month.
The spokesman says there are no signs of a lung infection.
The spokesman also says the pope had a good appetite this morning and "the post-operative situation continues regularly."
The Pope is 84 years old.
