Nuclear Weapons Plant Clean Up on Schedule

Federal officials said the former Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant will be cleaned up by 2006.

Shipments of bomb-grade plutonium from Rocky Flats to the Savannah River Site in South Carolina are on schedule. They should be finished by the end of next year.

Senator Wayne Allard and U.S. Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham toured the site before visiting the Energy Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden. Both said cleaning up the area is a top priority.

Once the plutonium and other radioactive waste is removed, Rocky Flats will become a wildlife sanctuary.
