With control of the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House and the Colorado Legislature at stake, contributors have poured more than $36 million into Colorado political campaigns so far.
A half-dozen state Senate seats are attracting money at a pace never seen before in the state. A Rocky Mountain News review of campaign-finance reports found records or near records for money raised in races across the state.
The state Senate and state House have surpassed fund-raising records set for the entire 2000 campaign with four weeks to go.
So far, about $5.7 million has been spent for state legislative seats. Two races for state Senate seats have surpassed $500,000, almost double the previous record. Two others have exceeded $300,000, the amount it previously cost to win a Colorado seat in Congress.
