New Honor for Troops

The US Army will begin awarding new combat badges to recognize armor, artillery and cavalry troops who fight as infantry in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Pentagon is still working out what the close-combat badge will look like, and what soldiers will have to accomplish in order to get one.

The badges will be issued starting this fall.

Since World War Two, the Army has awarded the Combat Infantry Badge to infantry and Special Forces soldiers in recognition of their wartime achievements.

Hundreds of Fort Carson soldiers with the Third Brigade Combat Team and the Tenth Special Forces Group have already received the badge for fighting in Iraq.

The tank-heavy Third Armored Cavalry Regiment doesn't qualify for that award, but could possibly be honored with the new badge.
