The Natural Resources Conservation Service in Colorado has received more than $1.25 million to restore private land affected by the High Park Fire, which burned across roughly 136 square miles this summer west of Fort Collins.
The federal Emergency Watershed Protection funds are meant to relieve imminent hazards caused by fires and other natural disasters. The Natural Resources Conservation Service said Thursday that the money will allow for measures to stabilize soil, slow runoff of debris from burned slopes during rainstorms, and stem erosion on lands downstream and downslope from burned areas.
Work will include applying straw and seed mix to burned areas, flood protection and projects to reduce sediment entering tributaries to the Big Thompson River.
