Despite bitterly cold weather, several students and faculty at Colorado College are staging an outdoor "sit-in" at Mathias Hall on campus. It began Friday at noon and will contiue through noon on Saturday.

The "sit-in" is in response to an increase in homophobic and racist incidents on campus. The most recent events include anti-gay graffiti on several dorm room doors. Students say they got together to organize the event to show that they won't tolerate this type of actions on their campus or in their community. Students say this isn't in response to any one event, but a culmination of events over a period of time.

Another topic the students would like to tackle is the way students behave at Colorado College Tiger hockey games. Students routinely chant at the opposing teams, and according to students, at times those chants are homophobic in nature.

The "sit-in" is open to the public, and students say if you can handle the cold, you're welcome to join. They will be there until noon on saturday.

Diversity has always been one of the greatest strengths of America. It has become quite fashionable to bash "political correctness" usually by those who feel they have every right to openly vent their bigotry and racism as well as bully and harass others all the while waving the flag. I am a "European-American," an immigrant son of immigrant parents, who has faced prejudice here often ugly at times not from minorities but from white people for not being the right kind of white. Equality is one of the founding tenets of this great nation and it's sad that some have to be reminded of it. Hatred, bigotry and racism is the real downfall of our society.

I find it quite interesting that this is the 10th most popular story yet ther are NO comments? Maybe that's because it's ok for every other ethnic background to have some sort of a history month or organization that promoted their race and it's wrong for white people to have the same. How many white people do you hear calling themselves European-Americans? Political correctness is the downfall of our society.
