(Denver-AP) -- Southern Colorado will get part of a $4.4 million federal grant given to the state to recruit teachers from non-teaching fields.
The University of Southern Colorado is one of three programs that will use the money to recruit and train new teachers from such fields as the telecommunications and engineering industries.
Colorado's grant is part of nearly $35 million to be given this year under the Education Department's Transition to Teaching program.
The funds will help head off a shortage of teachers in critical subjects such as math, science, foreign languages, English as a second language, reading and special education.
Those shortages are likely to worsen as student enrollments increase and teachers retire.
