Essay Controversy

Several members of the school's ethnic studies program showed up to defend Ward Churchill's free speech rights. But there was no sign of Churchill.

Churchill's 2001 essay also referred to so-called "gallant sacrifices" of the "combat teams" that struck America. It sparked death threats in New York, where Hamilton College officials today canceled an appearance by Churchill scheduled for Thursday.

Churchill says his comments have been taken out of context and that he's not an advocate of violence. Governor Owens and Republican congressman Bob Beauprez want Churchill to step down.
