The U.S. Forest Service Saturday will reopen parts of the Mount Zirkel Wilderness where two wildfires burned 31,000 acres this summer.
The fires are still burning but have been contained.
Officials were wary about lifting the ban too soon because of so-called "snags." Those are trees with burned-out roots that can topple easily in the wind. Snags are prevalent in the closure areas.
Crews have removed snags along trails and roads, but visitors are urged to use caution when traveling off trails and roads.
Some closures in the Hahn's Peak/Bears Ears Ranger District remain in effect. All fire-related closures in the Flat Tops Wilderness have been lifted.
