Amendment 31 Rally

Hundreds of parents and students from across Colorado turned out in Denver to rally against Amendment 31.

Voters will vote on the proposed change to the state constitution in next month's election. The amendment would replace bilingual education with an intensive English-immersion program aimed at getting students into regular classrooms after one year.

Parents at Sunday's rally represented schools where students who are native English speakers learn side-by-side with Spanish speakers. Teachers alternate between instructing in English and Spanish so both kinds of students become bilingual.

They say Amendment 31 would eliminate these programs.
