Housing Controversy

Updated: Mon 10:13 AM, Oct 14, 2002

Congress has approved nearly $1 million to build houses for two four-star generals at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs.

But a Colorado congressman said he might try to delay construction if he is not convinced the spending is necessary.

Rep. Joel Hefley said the Pentagon should not be building $500,000 homes for generals at a time of unmet housing needs for lower-ranking officers and personnel.

The cost for each house is more than double the average price for a home in Colorado Springs, but Air Force officials said the houses have to have features to let them serve as in-home command centers.
