Taser Use

In the first six months Colorado Springs police carried Tasers, they used the weapons more often than larger departments in Denver, Phoenix and Albuquerque.

A review of the Colorado Springs Police Department by The Gazette in Colorado Springs found that officers fired stun guns at people 240 times from February to August. They averaged 40 uses a month in the first six months.

During a 14-month period, Denver police used Tasers an average of 16 times a month.

Colorado Springs police also used the weapons more than departments in Phoenix, which has four times as many officers, and Albuquerque, which is 37 percent larger.

Police Chief Luis Velez said he didn't know why his department's statistics were higher than in other cities. He said his officers were justified when they used them.
