Tsunami Warning System

Scientists say the death toll in Asia caused by a massive tsunami might have been reduced if India and Sri Lanka had been part of an international system designed to warn coastal communities about potentially deadly waves.

Thousands of people in India and Sri Lanka were killed after the most powerful earthquake recorded in the past 40 years triggered walls of water on Sunday.

Waverly Person of the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden says there are no tidal gauges in the Indian Ocean, where the tsunami occurred.

He says people had no warning that massive waves were on the way.
