(Lake George-AP) -- Efforts to reseed hillsides on private property to avoid erosion near the Hayman fire are meeting with little success.
The fire, which raged for almost a month this summer, burned more than 137,000 acres in Park, Teller, Douglas and Jefferson counties.
Most of the damage was on land managed by the U.S. Forest Service. But nearly 600 private properties in Teller and Park counties also were damaged by the fire.
Even where homes survived, the nearby land was scorched bare. Any precipitation could result in severe erosion.
Leon Kot, district conservationist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service, said the work isn't going well. Federal rules are making it hard to get the federal money allocated for reseeding.
