Convicted Rapist Going Back to Jail

A La Junta man convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl in 1998 faces a possible sentence of life in prison after being found guilty of attacking a woman last year.

Pueblo jurors deliberated about three hours Wednesday before returning the verdict against 34-year-old Darin Whatley. The panel of nine women and three men convicted Whatley of second-degree kidnapping, sexual assault, and aggravated robbery.

Prosecutors said Whatley stalked a woman at a Wal-Mart store in June 2003, but she drove away without knowing she was being watched.

Whatley then followed her to a mostly-empty parking garage, pulled a knife, and drove her to an unknown location to rape her.

A sentencing date will be set in February. Whatley is jailed without bond.
