The fight for gamblers between Central City and Black Hawk isn't dying down.
Central City recently raised its own money and built a highway connecting it directly to Interstate 70 so visitors don't have to drive through Black Hawk first.
Now Black Hawk has put up $150 million to excavate two tunnels connecting state Highway 119 with the interstate. But the tunnel plan first proposed in 1996 is mired in a lengthy environmental study.
Currently, drivers wanting to get from I-70 to Colorado 119 must backtrack three miles down U-S Highway Six. The tunnel would take drivers directly from I-70 to 119.
The two-lane tunnels would punch into a cliff 300 feet above Clear Creek and go north for 38-hundred feet.
