Three of the four U.S. soldiers charged in the suffocation death of an Iraqi prisoner of war will appear at a hearing Thursday at Fort Carson outside of Colorado Springs.
The three are charged with murder and dereliction of duty in the death of a 57-year-old Iraqi soldier last year. The hearing is similar to a preliminary hearing in civilian court and will determine if they are prosecuted.
Authorities say the Iraqi was killed with an electrical cord. A Pentagon report also says a soldier sat on the Iraqi as he was restrained inside a sleeping bag.
The handling of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. troops has become a worldwide scandal fed by images from the Abu Ghraib prison. At least 19 prisoner deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan have been investigated as homicides by the military.
