Possible Deadline Extension

(Washington-AP) -- A key senator has agreed to extend the
deadline for some airports to screen all baggage.

Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ernest Hollings of South
Carolina filed a bill late yesterday to allow up to 40 airports to
take longer than December 31st to meet the requirement.

Denver International Airport Director Bruce Baumgartner says the
airport needs $50 million and more time to ensure all baggage is screened for explosives.

Baumgartner and other airport directors support a measure that would let them miss the deadline for installing explosive detection systems if they come up with specific plans.

It's unclear whether D-I-A would receive more time to comply
with the baggage-screening mandate under Hollings' proposal.
