Talks between Colorado members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local Seven and King Soopers, Safeway and Albertsons have
stalled numerous times since they started in August.
The workers' current contract was set to expire about a month ago, but the union and the stores agreed to an extension to keep talks going with a federal mediator. Talks could continue until one side gives the other a five-day notice of pulling out of the negotiations.
Many of the sticking points have revolved around health care coverage.
When workers accepted the extension last month, they also rejected the stores' latest contract offer. The vote also had the effect of approving a strike unless the stores offer a substantially different contract.
