A state audit revealed the overcharges, which officials say
could date back to 1997.
Examples of overcharges uncovered in the audit include
7-dollars, 20-cents for a motor vehicle lien release that should
have cost a dollar-fifty, and 8-dollars, 20-cents for a
manufactured home duplicate title that also should have cost a
dollar-fifty.
The mistakes also mean many local governments collected money to
which they were not entitled because of programming errors in the
department's computer system.
Revenue department officials say they will work with the
governor's office and legislative budget officials to try to find a
way to issue refunds.
Complicating matters is the fact that the agency destroyed
records before September of last year, and there is no way to
determine everyone who might be entitled to refunds.
