MEEKER, Colo. (AP) -- A new plan to remove about 100 wild horses in northwest Colorado has been released by the federal Bureau of Land Management.

The agency said Thursday that it will begin removing the wild horses in the West Douglas Herd Area next month.

Last year, a federal judge in Washington blocked the agency's plan to use helicopters and baits to trap and remove the wild horses from 128,000 acres of federal and private land near Rangely. The judge said the BLM had not determined whether removing the horses was necessary to preserve the ecological balance and multiple use of that area.

The BLM has been trying to move horses from the Rangely area since 1975, calling the area unsuitable for a wild herd.

There is a little better article in the Denver Post: http://www.denverpost.com/ci_16031827 Looks like they will be bought, adopted or retired to land in the midwest. I think they should leave well enough alone but at least it doesn't sound like they intend to euthanize them.

When I was at the BLM getting maps last spring and asked where I could see Colorado Mustangs I was told they were in the PEN's at Canyon City. I said all of them and they said Just about all of them. There must be money in the rounding up, penning, moving etc etc. And Because they were Native in Colorado thousands of years ago but left Mustangs can no longer be called Native anymore, after all they have only been reintroduced 400 years ago. Thus no real "Wildlife" rights. Only managed with Gov. contracts and lobbyists. One more point it not the small ranchers that want them gone, it is oil, gas and megga corporations who are bidding for the land. To me they are a symbol of the west. They evolved here why can they not be left alone to live in their own family social system. I heard it is as sophisticated as the Elephants. Thanks
