Iran says it will release one of the three jailed American hikers on Saturday, to mark the end of Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

It's common in the Islamic world to mark the Eid al-Fitr holiday by showing clemency and releasing prisoners.

Reporters got the word by text message from the Culture Ministry.

A spokesman for the ministry says one of the detained Americans will be released at the Tehran hotel where the Americans' mothers were allowed to meet them in May. He didn't say which one would be freed.

The two men and one woman have been held since July 2009, when they were arrested along the Iraqi border.

Their families say the three were hiking in the mountains of Iraq's northern Kurdish region and if they crossed into Iran, it was accidental. Iran has accused them of spying.
