Fire crews have put out a fire that burned on private property on Log Road in Calhan, that's off Highway 24 East in El Paso County.

The fire burned dozens of junked cars, buses and a mobile home.

Firefighters say the shifting winds make it difficult to do their jobs and get ahead of the fast-moving fire. Fire crews came from all over El Paso County.

It's believed the fire started when Duane Hayes was warming up the engine on an old car. "We turned it off, then we noticed the fire develop underneath," Hayes said.

Hayes told 11 News he and some friends tried to put the fire out, but the winds caused it to burn out of control.

The fire burned on private property, and no one had to be evacuated.

Trash or dry, dead grass blown or moved underneath by varmits in contact with the catalytic converter which can reach more than 1,000 degrees can do it. It's also not wise to drive a vehicle with a converter around in dry grass high enough to come in contact with it either.
