A new foot bridge has been completed as part of a project by a soon-to-be Eagle Scout.

"It truly was a safety hazard, the boards were just eaten away and rotted away," said Nicole Smith, a concerned mother.

Neighbors say a foot bridge leading to Foothills Elementary School had been increasingly dangerous. So, a soon-to-be Eagle Scout decided to do something about it.

About 50 volunteers went to work Labor Day weekend, to finish the bridge.

"It's a leadership project," said 14-year-old Morgan Smith, the project organizer. "I had to walk this bridge for five years."

The bridge crosses a canal, connecting the Rockrimmon neighborhood to Foothills Elementary.

"I went to Foothills, my sister went to Foothills, my grandma taught at Foothills," Morgan said. So, it's no surprise he knew how important the bridge was to the neighbors.

For the last year and a half, Morgan had been hard at work, getting approval for the project from the Colorado Springs Parks Department. To get to this point Morgan spent months asking for donations.

Morgan said all of the work he’s put in taught him one key lesson. "Planning before hand is everything," he said.

Morgan collected nearly $5,000 for this project.

Along with all the money Morgan collected, several businesses and neighbors donated their time and materials to help.
