One of two men accused of stealing a dead airman's belongings in Colorado Springs has pleaded guilty to the crime and will spend three years behind bars. 30-year-old Denard O’Neal Thompson was sentenced Wednesday.

Thompson and 22-year-old Dwain Boyd were arrested several months ago, after the theft. They were accused of stealing the belongings of fallen Senior Airman Bradley Smith right out of the family's rental car. It was parked at a Golden Corral Restaurant.

"We think that it's fair and just," said Bradley’s father Gary Smith. He says their family is still grieving; it's a wound he says that just won't heal.

"It's something his mom and I are never going to get over. It's changed our lives completely," Smith said.

Bradley's laptops, watch and dog tags were all taken while the family was in town for his memorial service back in February.

"Just absolutely heartbroken, I wake up everyday and just miss him more than anything in the whole world and those little things to remember him by like his wallet just mean the world to me and it's all gone," said his widow Tiffany.

The two men accused in the crime were caught on surveillance camera in the restaurant parking lot, but the items they stole were never found.

"The thing we lost that was closest to our hearts were the dogs tags. He was wearing those dog tags when he was killed in Afghanistan," said Smith.

The second suspect, Dwain Boyd, will go to trial on December 6th. The smith family says they are pretty sure the two men threw away their son's things and they will probably never be found.
