Iraq's prime minister is assuring his people that their own security forces will protect them, now that U.S. troops are ending their combat mission there.
Nouri al-Maliki also says the end of the U.S. combat role leaves Iraq independent and an equal to the United States.
But the extent of U.S. influence in Iraq is still evident. Vice President Joe Biden, who's in Baghdad to mark the transition, held a round of meetings today with political leaders there. He pushed them to end the impasse that has held up formation of a new government.
He wouldn't offer any details of the talks, except to say that they had "gone well."
