One person was killed in a two-vehicle crash south of Pueblo Sunday night.
The crash shut down northbound I-25 at exit 87 (Verde Road) while troopers investigated the scene. The road has since been reopened.
According to Colorado State Patrol, the roadway was slick from rain that hit the area Sunday evening, causing the driver of a 2003 Kia Sorento to lose control of the vehicle. The driver first collided with a guardrail on the left side of the road, then troopers say he spun across the roadway and hit another guardrail.
After the Kia came to a stop, State Patrol says an oncoming Toyota Tundra crashed into it, pushing the Kia further up the road and ejecting one person inside. Troopers say that passenger, identified as 58-year-old Jerry Jinkins of Colorado Springs, was not wearing a seat belt. He died at the scene.
The driver of the Kia, 30-year-old Jerrel Jinkins, and a second passenger, 26-year-old Rashada Jinkins, both sustained minor injuries. No one in the Toyota Tundra was injured. Troopers say all the survivors were buckled up at the time of the crash.
State Patrol says speeding was a factor in the crash. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be involved.
