Alcohol is suspected to have played a role in a single-vehicle crash above Helen Hunt Falls Friday night.
Officers were first called to North Cheyenne Canon just before 8 p.m. on reports of a vehicle that went off the side of the road. They later determined the crash occurred above the canyon, along the stretch of Gold Camp Road that runs between Helen Hunt Falls and the road's junction with High Drive.
"It was closer to Tunnel 3," a Springs police officer told 11 News.
According to police, the driver somehow lost control of his vehicle and went off the side of the road. Our crew on scene observed that the car appeared to have made it 80 feet down the hill.
The driver also struck something on its way down.
"A tree, a boulder, maybe a dirt pile," the officer said, explaining that the car made significant impact with something, but it wasn't clear what.
The female passenger was seriously injured and taken to the hospital. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Driver Damian Garnett, 27, was arrested for vehicular assault.
