A YouTube video has gone viral: a woman registering Republican voters saying on tape that she's getting paid by El Paso County to do so.

When you go to the grocery store, you might be stopped outside and asked if you want to register to vote. In the video, a woman is outside a local Safeway trying to register Republicans. A shopper confronts her and asks who she works for. The woman hesitates before saying she's working for the county clerk’s office.

11 News spoke with Wayne Williams, the El Paso County clerk and recorder, Sunday night.

"You can find just about anything you want on the Internet. People have contacted us in a very reasonable way to ask questions, and we've responded. There are others who were kind of gullible and believed whatever they saw and believed that this young lady, who was in error, happened to be telling the truth and she is not,” Williams said.

We reached out to the person who posted the video, who goes under the user name goldiggermom on YouTube. We haven’t heard back from her. We’re also trying to track down the woman who was registering voters.

The county clerk tells 11 News that it is perfectly legal for groups to go out and try to register voters, even if they only want to register voters for one party. However, if a person is trying to register voters for party “A”, and someone from party “B” wants to register too, that person must turn in the party B voter's information too.

The deadline to register is October 9.
