It's been three weeks since the deadly earthquake struck Haiti and thousands are still in need.

Folks in Southern Colorado are doing what they can to help. There are several different local fund raising efforts underway to help victims of the quake as they begin to rebuild the country.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department and American Medical Response kicked off a campaign Tuesday. They're collecting tents to send to Haitians who lost their homes and are living in fields.

"These tents will provide the adequate shelter that they can at least on a temporary basis call home," said paramedic Eric Miller.

Students at several Falcon District 49 schools are also doing what they can to help the earthquake victims.

Springs Ranch Elementary School held Crazy Hat Day last Friday. Students were allowed to wear a hat to school if they donated at least $1 to help Haitians.

The school raised $1150 for the Red Cross to give to earthquake victims.

"We have 600 students, so for the amount that we raised, over $1000 just shows the support," said teacher Paige Vincent.

If you would like to donate new or gently used family sized tents or tarps, you can drop them off at AMR headquarters at 2370 North Powers Boulevard or any of the 20 fire stations in Colorado Springs.

The tent drive runs through Monday, February 8. Then, the donations will be flown on a charter jet to Port-Au-Prince where they will be distributed to those in need.

I totally agree with conservative. I can understand why people are upset about the U.S helping Haiti so much but the truth is those people have nothing. They lost their homes, families and everything that they had to call their own. Helping them out is the right thing to do but unless you are in their shoes, you would not know what its like to be homeless and having to bury your family members in mass graves with only god knows who else and even having to burn their bodys. They didnt ask for this to happen, this was an act of god and now he is watching to see who the real people are and who has a big enough heart to give even a dollar to make a difference. Anyone who can look at these pictures and not feel sorry for these people has no concience whatsoever. My heart goes out to the survivers and I hope things get better somehow.

Dear American and Outraged, As an unabashed conservative I am shocked by your response. I am the one from the interview. I travel to Haiti extensively and clearly you have never traveled to Haiti where the people, LOVE Americans and the US. In the US people have opportunity in Haiti, there is none. The tents going to Haiti will have a direct impact on the Haitians because I know exactly who is distributing them. The investment is real and will have a tremendous impact. I invite you to travel there with me and if after seeing the real horror you feel your investment in the lives of this hemisphere's most desparately poor was a waste, I'll refund your plane ticket. Sending tents and well directed funds to Haiti does not hurt American jobs or future. In fact, it secures it. Again, as a conservative I am shocked by your abject lack of compassion. I am easy to contact and you may get ahold of me through AMR or the Colorado Springs Fire Department. Eric Miller My real name!
