FSIS and the establishment are concerned that some product may be present in household freezers. FSIS was notified of a multistate investigation of E. coli O121 illnesses on March 19, 2013. Food samples were collected from an ill individual in New York as part of this investigation, and tested by the New York State Department of Health Wadsworth Laboratory. At present, the outbreak includes 24 cases in 15 states that led to seven hospitalizations and one case of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure. A sample of a Farm Rich frozen chicken mini quesadilla product from a New York case tested positive for the outbreak strain of E. coli O121. Additionally, a sample of leftover Farm Rich mini pepperoni pizza slices product from a Texas case tested positive for the same strain, confirmed by FSIS lab technicians. Ten cases in Michigan, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia report consuming Farm Rich products. FSIS is continuing to work with federal and state public health partners on this investigation, including the New York State Department of Health, New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets, Food and Drug Administration, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to ensure that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at: www.fsis.usda.gov/FSIS_Recalls/Open_Federal_Cases/index.asp. Infection with E. coli O121 can result in dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps 2-8 days (3-4 days, on average) after exposure to the organism. While most people recover within a week, some develop HUS. This condition can occur among persons of any age but is most common in children under 5-years old and older adults. Symptoms of HUS may include fever, abdominal pain, pale skin tone, fatigue, small, unexplained bruises or bleeding from the nose and mouth and decreased urination. Persons who experience these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately. Posted: 04/05/2013 - The community is coming together to make our neighborhoods safer, especially in one area known for it’s crime. For years Fountain and Chelton has been known as an area with a lot of crime. Those who live there decided they won’t put up with it anymore. It’s called the Fountain and Chelton Partnership. The goal is to turn the group into an official non-profit Neighborhood and Business Organization. Right now they meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at 8:00 a.m. in the Sand Creek Division Community Room. They are also working to clean up the area. Saturday they are providing free dumpsters for residents to clean out their homes. Between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm residents can bring bagged trash and large items to the south end of Mazatlan Circle where dumpsters will be provided for free.

Posted: 04/01/2013 - A Donation drive for Children's Hospital at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, CO. From Gabes FB page: We recently spent a week at Children's Hospital at Memorial in Colorado Springs and know first hand the toll this can take on families and especially these children. While in the hospital we noticed a need and want to help fill this need. The hospital has play rooms and activities for the kids but supplies are limited and deplete fast. We decided to get involved and try and get more things and activities for the kids there. We are asking that everyone pitch in and help us blow these kids minds. We will be collecting donations to purchase items or if you want to purchase items and donate them please let us know. Cash is always accepted and we can take Paypal for the donation, if needed. If you want to purchase items, I recommend coloring books, crayons, small puzzles, games and toys. Because of sanitation issues all items must be new in package. When we have items together we are looking at making trip up in a few weeks and all are welcome to attend donation. We will also be posting pics of donating. Any and all help welcome, please share this post and lets make a kids day.

Posted: 03/28/2013 - We want to warn you about a scam that is nearly irresistible to consumers. Scammers offer to pay you to go shopping. But the BBB says it’s not real. The check for nearly two thousand dollars attracts consumers who want to make easy money. They offer to pay you to be a mystery shopper. Before the “money” from the check you get clears the bank, you’re asked to go to a website and wire money to buy training materials or send back money you didn’t spend at the stores. But the check is a fake, and victims spend money they don’t actually have. The current scam going around Colorado Springs is from a company not accredited by the BBB. It’s L.S. Management Inc. out of Tennessee.
