Unemployment Help Offered To Fire Victims

The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment is offering unemployment benefits to workers who lost their jobs and others who are unable to work because of the High Park and Waldo Canyon wildfires that began on June 9.

This includes those unable to work because their place of employment was in an evacuated area, anyone who could not work due to an injury directly associated with the fire, or those currently unable to work because of the fire.

The benefits are being offered to people who live or work in El Paso and Larimer counties where the fires occurred. The department said Monday that benefits could continue through December if workers remain unemployed.

Those who believe they qualify must submit their Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) form by August 8. Those in El Paso County can file a claim at the Disaster Recovery Center on 105 N. Spruce Street in Colorado Springs, the Pikes Peak Workforce Center, or call the Wildfire Unemployment Resource line at 1-888-843-8382.

To qualify, the state wants proof applicants were working at the time.
