Being a small business owner can be difficult, and women say it is even more of a struggle for them.

A group of those business owners spoke out and empowered one another at a roundtable event on Monday at Colorado College.

The discussion was prompted by Colorado Senator Mark Udall and the Small Business Association.

The women voiced concerns about being relevant in the area and growing their business presence.

"I appreciate the senator bringing everyone together because it was needed to say, you know, here are several representatives of women-owned businesses but are experiencing the good, the bad, and the ugly. So it was a very real conversation," said Kerri Valdez, Acumen Environmental Services.

"It's huge because I've been in business for 13 years. I've been through a lot of ups and downs and things of that nature… but we create jobs, we sustain jobs, we pay taxes, and we were not able to do that when we don't have access to the opportunities that should be there," said Lisa Buckley, American Automation Building Services.

The meeting is part of a statewide tour hosted by Sen. Udall.
