More police and fire jobs will be coming to Colorado Springs if Mayor Steve Bach's proposed budget passes.
Bach released a proposed 2014 budget for the city Monday. The proposal is a $13.8 million increase from the initial 2014 budget and makes room for 49 new public safety jobs, which includes police and fire.
However, Bach is proposing the elimination of 96 non-public safety positions. The majority of those jobs would be IT, fleet and airport positions.
The Colorado Springs Police Department is hoping to receive $5 million, while the Springs Fire Department would be given $4.7 million. The funding is to provide new officers and enhance the communications center to improve call response times.
This proposed budget totals $245 million, a 2.5 percent decrease from last year’s final budget.
This is just the first step in the budget process. The Colorado Springs City Council and Mayor Bach will have a series of workshops to discuss the proposed budget. City Council will vote on the budget before it becomes official.
We’re told everyone will have a chance to voice their opinions on October 17 through email and social media.
