The unemployment rate remained unchanged from May to June, as employers added 80,000 jobs--more than the number added in May, but still below expectations.

According to the Labor Department, the national unemployment rate remained at 8.2 percent.

The April-June quarter has seen only a third of the jobs created per month in 2012's first quarter, at an average of 75,000 jobs a month versus 226,000 created January-March.

Presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney wasted no time seizing on the news, saying that the jobs number show a new president is needed.

"This kick in the gut has got to end," he said.

President Obama directed some criticism at Congress for the jobs numbers, saying voters needed to help break a "stalemate" that is preventing stronger job growth.
